Michael J. Latta EMS Scholarship Michael J. Latta completed his Basic EMT education with StarFire EMS when we offered the course at Northern Essex Community College at its Haverhill campus. He continued working with StarFire EMS and became a valued member of our program staff. He greatly enjoyed helping students learn. Mike had been reviewing various paramedic program offerings in the months before he died and had planned to enroll in a paramedic program in the fall of 2007. Working for Patriot Ambulance, at the age of 21, he suffered a cardiac arrest while behind the wheel of an ambulance driving a patient (in cardiac arrest) to the hospital. Despite aggressive efforts by both EMS and emergency department staff, Mike was unable to be resuscitated. Last call: 26 April 2007. The Michael J. Latta EMS Scholarship Foundation was founded by his family. In Mike's memory, the Foundation's purpose is to provide financial assistance to EMTs pursuing education as paramedics. The Foundation will make an award annually of between $500 - $1,000 scholarship to an EMT enrolling in a paramedic program. The scholarship website - http://www.emsscholarship.com contains details and an application. Students already enrolled in a paramedic program are not eligible. Refresher Courses StarFire EMS expects to offer basic and paramedic level refresher courses three times during 2011. We are exploring a variety of on-line and in-person options.
