You know that education can be very expensive. We want you know - up front - how much the education programs at StarFire EMS will cost - from the time you start taking the course through the time you complete the testing process necessary for certification as an EMT. Scroll through the items below to learn what you can expect your Basic EMT course at StarFire EMS to cost. NO SECRETS!
Like any other business, we love it when our students can pay their tuition in full at the time the register for the course. StarFire EMS recognizes, however, that is often not possible. Go to our Basic EMT Courses page to see the payment plan available to you.
Our Basic EMT course tuition is comprised of
Costs for the CORI evaluation fee ($15.00), CPR course tuition ($75.00), malpractice insurance ($16.00), and a program patch ($9.50) are included in the tuition.
Textbooks are purchased separately from the publisher (information is provided in an e-mail once the initial deposit or tuition payment is made). The publisher provides a discount code that reduces textbook costs approximately 20%.
The Basic EMT Practical Skills Exam Preparation Course and State Certification Fee/Practical Exam Fee/Written Exam Fee are purchased separately. They are NOT included in the program tuition.
StarFire EMS Basic EMT students order their textbooks directly from Jones & Bartlett Publishing. A special "coupon code" provides the student with a discount off the list price of 20%.
Pricing as of 1 December 2011 - $154.95 before discount. This covers the cost of the textbook, a workbook that goes with the textbook, an access code to an on-line website, & two supplemental textbooks.
Price with discount - $123.95.
The Practical Skills Exam Preparation Course is taught by Massachusetts Basic EMT Skills Examiners. Students have the opportunity to review the skills standards tools used by State Skills Examiners as they evaluate a candidate's performance during the certification exam.
While this is not a required course for the EMT student/exam candidate to complete, we have found that students completing this course tend to do very well on the practical skills exam as compared to students who do not complete this course
Certification application fee - $150 (payable to Commonwealth of Massachusetts)
Practical exam fee - $100 - $150 (depends on exam site)
Written exam fee - $55 (payable to PSI)
Students who struggled in high school/had an IEP or who have been out of school for any length of time may need extra help to
StarFire EMS has a program staff instructor who provides tutoring for $25.00 per hour. Students who are struggling usually spend four to six (4 - 6) hours working with our tutor. The student and tutor work together to determine how much time is needed. At the end of their time together, the student has usually improved graded performance from grades in the 50's/60's to grades in the 80's. An awesome investment of time and money! Tutoring sessions are conducted on-site at our Haverhill program facility - the Smiley School, 969 Main Street (Exit 51B off Route 495 - Route 125/Plaistow).
