The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires EMTs be certified before they can work on an ambulance as an EMT. The certification exam has both a practical skills (hands-on) and a computer-based written portion.
StarFire EMS offers a Basic EMT Practical Exam Prep course to help students fine tune their practical skills prior to the exam. The course begins the week following the Basic EMT course end and continues through the week of the course State Certifica- tion Exam. This course is taught by a Massachusetts EMT Basic Skills Examiner. Historically, students completing this course tend to do better on the practical skills exams than students who opt to take the exam without taking this course.
Costs are outlined below. The Basic EMT Practical Exam Prep Course can be paid for on the Basic EMT Courses page.
StarFire EMS works with program students two nights a week for two hours a night from the time the Basic EMT course ends until their practical skills exam. These sessions prepare the candidate to be successful on the practical exam. State certified examiners work with students to buff and polish skills learned in class for testing. Historically, we have learned that students completing this Practical Exam Prep Course are more likely to pass the practical exam than those who don't take the course. Payment can be made here.
Candidates for EMT Certification must complete an application and submit it to the State Office of Emergency Medical Services, along with a non-refundable applica- tion fee of $150.00, payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Payment must be in the form of a personal check or money order. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is not set up for PayPal or credit card payments.
Candidates for EMT Certification must successfully complete a four-station practical skills exam. The four skills stations are Cardiac Arrest Management, Fracture Management, Medical/Trauma Assessment, and Spinal Injury Manage- ment. Each testing site charges a non-refundable practical exam fee. Payment is made directly to the exam site. Some sites accept PayPal/credit card payments.
Currently, Massachusetts has contracted with PSI to provide the computer-based written exam testing for EMT certification. A non-refundable fee payable to PSI is due at the time of registration for the exam. Registration can be done on-line or by phone. Credit card payments are accepted by PSI.
Candidates who successfully complete the written exam with a score of 70% or better leave the test site with their EMT certification in hand (means you can walk out of the exam and into an interview with a potential employer WITH proof of certification!)
